At this point, approximately one third of the colony’s early inhabitants were black slaves. The permanent settlement of this colony, however, did not occur until 1670. The first Africans came to America in 1526 a Spanish expedition from the West Indies that settled along the southern coast, in an area that was later named South Carolina. However, African tradition is closely intertwined in North American History. Through thorough research and the use of both primary and secondary sources, Wood seeks to uncover the role of blacks within this colony, which, in light of specific circumstances, proved to be significant and efficacious in its evolution.īlack history is not often, nor easily, traced through this period. Wood’s examination of their early subsistence in North America is confined to colonial South Carolina, where it was greatest and most significant. In his book Black Majority: Negroes in Colonial South Carolina from 1670 through the Stono Rebellion Peter Wood does an exceptional study of black history dating back to the colonial era.
